NSW:Target on alcohol results in 1,364 arrests
More than 13 hundred arrests for alcohol related offences were made across the country
last night.
Police began Operation Unite .. a joint initiative with New Zealand targeting trouble
makers and antisocial behaviour aimed at reducing alcohol fuelled violence.
One of the most alarming arrests was that of a taxi-driver caught drinking-driving
in New South Wales.
The 44 year-old driver had four passengers in his car when he was stopped by police
for a random breath test.
Operation Unite spokesperson Commissioner ANDREW SCIPIONE says recent research shows
someone dies each day in Australia as a result of someone else's drinking .. and that
alcohol is linked to almost 45 thousand assaults.
He says the operation isn't about restricting the public from going out and having
a good time .. but about promoting a message that everyone has to consider their behaviour
and the impact it may have long after the night is over.
The operation ends tomorrow.
