Fed: Air traffic control industrial dispute simmers
MELBOURNE, Aug 30 AAP - Air traffic controllers called off today's nationwide strikebut further industrial action is likely if talks with their employer body do not producean agreement soon.
Today's strike over a long-running enterprise bargaining dispute was abandoned yesterdayafter the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC) ruled it illegal.
But the union representing air traffic controllers, Civil Air, said the cancellationof the strike had done nothing to resolve the wrangle underlying the dispute, and negotiationswith the employers had been deadlocked now for 18 months.
Civil Air president Ted Lang said in Melbourne yesterday that the union's nationalexecutive was looking to extend the bargaining period, a move that would enable the unionto resume industrial action.
Mr Lang called on the employers, AirServices Australia, to return to the negotiatingtable in good faith.
The parties resumed talks yesterday but after three hours they ended abruptly whenproceedings once again turned sour.
Sticking points between the warring parties include fatigue issues, personal leave, responsibilities and career paths.
