SA: Volkswagen unveils fuel miser
ADELAIDE, April 22 AAP - German car producer Volkswagen has revealed the world's mostfuel-efficient car registered for road use.
The company showed off the diesel-powered one-litre concept car, which uses less thanone litre of fuel to cover 100km, to shareholders at its recent annual meeting in Hamburg.
Chairman Ferdinand Piech drove the previously top secret vehicle to the gathering,using about two litres of fuel to cover the 230km from Volkswagen's head office in Wolfsburg.
The car features a mid-engine design with a long and narrow body. The two occupantssit one behind the other to improve aerodynamics.
Power comes from a single cyclinder direct-injection diesel engine which produces just6.3 kilowatts.
Wheels are made from lightweight composite materials and feature 40.6cm low friction tyres.
Volkswagen said the concept could point the way to a new family of cars including modelsthat emphasised performance, family transport or day-to-day commuting.
