VIC: Violent crime against police on the rise

MELBOURNE, Feb 4 AAP - Violent crime against Victorian police was rising with more than
2,300 attacks a year including 62 police officers attacked with knives in 1998, double the
previous year, The Herald Sun reported today.

Police statistics also showed that 15 police were battered with clubs, bats and bars last
year, compared with nine such attacks in 1997, the paper said.

Twelve officers were attacked with guns, and seven were assaulted with vehicles, compared
to just one in 1997.
