Qld: Qld taxpayers foot $11.2 mln Indy bill

Queensland's parliament has been told the state's taxpayers will shell out $11.2 millionto help stage this year's Indy 300 motor race on the Gold Coast.

Sports Minister TERRY MACKENROTH says the funding for the Indy, to be held in lateOctober, is well justified, given that it generates more than $50 million in economicspinoffs.

He says it also creates more than 700 jobs and exposes Queensland to a television audienceof around 700 million people in 190 countries.

The organisation that runs the race series, Championship Auto Racing Teams, has publiclysignalled cash flow problems.

Mr MACKENROTH says he's confident, after meeting with the organisation's officials, that it can fulfil its contractual obligations.

The minister says more than 300,000 are expected to attend the race this year.
